Tough race yields a podium after a superb drive by Michael
As the lights went green for the start of the two hour race, a fast starting Ginetta and KTM saw David muscled out of third place and down to fifth. With each lap, David found new confidence in the car and was able to repass the KTM and the G50 that was struggling with over-heating tyres, keeping the leaders honest by matching their pace and maintaining a twelve second gap.
Bad luck struck on lap 30, when David hit some debris on the circuit, causing a left front puncture and damaging the rear diffuser. Skilfully, David was able to limp the car back to the pits to change tyres but the unscheduled stop had put the Mtech Ferrari a whole lap behind the leaders.
On lap 47, David handed the car over to Michael who began an instant charge, setting fastest race laps in pursuit of the KTM that was over 25 seconds down the road. Michael quickly caught and passed the KTM to take third place but with the leaders over a lap ahead, team orders to save fuel quickly followed.
βThe early puncture destroyed our changes of fighting for the win today. Our strategy was always to pit just the once for fuel and if we had of been on the lead lap, I think we could have forced the In2 Racing Porsche and FF Corse Ferrari into an extra stop. The Porsche ran out of fuel on the last lap so it shows just how marginal the race result was!
David (Back) did a fantastic job today; he was on the pace from the word go and kept his head during the early set back. It was a pleasure working with him this weekend and the entire team. They are an extremely professional bunch of guys at Mtech and I felt right at home from the moment I arrived in the paddock. A big thank you to Mike Edmonds for giving me the opportunity to drive for him and I hope to be with the team for the next round at Snetterton on the new β300β circuit (1/2nd May)β.
